Italy Hails US, Ukraine Talks

(MENAFN) Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani expressed approval on Tuesday regarding the recent dialogue in Washington between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and US President Donald Trump.

Tajani characterized the meeting as “another important piece in the peace mosaic,” which he said reinforces Kyiv’s stance in its ongoing standoff with Moscow.

Speaking to a news outlet, Tajani emphasized the significance of the day, noting that a shared commitment to securing Ukraine’s safety had emerged.

“It was a positive day, above all because everyone agreed on the principle of guaranteeing Ukraine's security, and this strengthens Zelenskyy's position in negotiations with Putin,” he stated.

This agreement, he explained, essentially embraced an Italian initiative suggesting an alternative interpretation of NATO’s Article 5.

The proposed model would support Ukraine’s sovereignty through a coordinated mutual defense framework in case of foreign aggression.

Tajani clarified the mechanism, indicating that “Ukraine's friendly countries, including the US, will have to intervene to defend it in the event of an attack.”

He also remarked that it would be a “good thing” if Russian leader Vladimir Putin acknowledged this clause.

Despite the symbolic strength of Putin’s recent encounter with Trump in Alaska, Tajani insisted that the Russian president should not be perceived as having triumphed.

“In three years, he hasn't achieved the conquest of Ukraine he wanted in three days. We're talking to him to seek a just peace, one that won't humiliate Ukraine,” he said, highlighting the failure of Moscow’s objectives.

He was also firm in affirming Ukraine’s right to decide its own future, especially regarding contested regions.

“No deals can be made over Zelensky’s head. We are by his side,” he declared, underlining that all decisions concerning Donbass and Crimea must remain in Ukrainian hands.

Finally, Tajani mentioned that various European heads of state, including Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, accompanied Zelenskyy during his visit to the White House.

This, he explained, was a deliberate demonstration of continental solidarity with Kyiv.
